Aside from the ability to actually repair the box, the question begs: Does he want the studio to be connected 100% or is telco DTMF control adequate?

If he doesn't have IP at the site, options for a wired remote control are really limited to the ARC 16 these days unless he can find a TC-8 or something in the same age window. If he has IP, the options open up greatly and the costs significantly reduced.

If only DTMF is needed, there are a plethora of systems out there from really simple to as complex as you can imagine. Most now come with IP accessibility as well.

In so far as a possible problem, check the power supply voltages and ripple.  It's a classic Power 1 tri-polar linear supply.  We had one exhibit inconsistent operation and swapped the PS. All was well again.
