Was the forward power normal?
It's possible that you got a bad set of transistors, but...
I've seen bad caps on the pallets that would cause the transistors to 
see a bad load no matter what you had on it.
The thing to do is to check all components in and attached to the output 
path, bring the power up very slow and look for any abnormal heating.

Since the transistors worked momentarily, I wouldn't think it was the 
iron. Another suspect is the mechanical connection to the heat sink.
